Schipske's Voting Record Since 1992

Susan B. Anthony once declared: "voting is a right protective of all other rights." If we don't vote in all elections -- especially city elections, we don't have a voice. Fortunately, the 5th Council District has the largest turnout of voters in city elections: 40.4%.

The Press Telegram (click here) just ran a story on the voting records of incumbents and candidates running in the 5th District, the 9th and the 3rd. The PT unfortunately only published the records from 2004 onward. To save them the effort, here's my voting record from the records of the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters since 1992 (I was registered since 1971 -- back in the days you had to be 21 to vote; but the records only show from 1992 onward. And I also voted in April 1992 -- that's when I was elected to the Long Beach Community College Board of Trustees):

Who is Gerrie Schipske?

We know her. We trust her.

We all know Gerrie Schipske. We've heard her name in the Long Beach community for more years than we can count.

We stand next to her at her numerous community meetings and work side-by-side with her solving our difficult problems.

We serve on the non-profits she founded to help our community. We read her blog and exchange e-mails with her that share concerns about our families and community. We've taught her kids.

We read her books on Long Beach history. We've worked with her in our local hospital. We share the same trash can when we're cleaning up our parks and lakes.

We sometimes disagree with her but we respect how hard she tries to do the right thing by asking questions and not being a "rubber-stamp."

We know her. We trust her. And we support Gerrie Schipske to continue trying to make local government more open and accountable.

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske was elected to represent the residents of the 5th Council District in 2006. Since her election, Councilwoman Schipske:

• Works tirelessly to open up the processes of local government to the public.
  

• Stands up for the taxpayer time and again during Council votes -- often when few others will.

• Keeps her campaign promises that she would oppose increased property taxes. She was the only member of the City Council to do so. 
  

• Consistently refuses to accept gifts from lobbyists -- even though she is the only one to do so.

• Diligently communicates with her residents using a blog, e-mail alerts, website, holding public meetings and walking her district.
